hcso calls for service listservice calls that may or may not be jumper related.updated: 02.26.20 • archived: 11.28.23 |
we are curious as to how the Hillsborough County Sheriff's department responds to jumpers and yet the reports fail to make the day's calls for service report like they should. selective reporting? how long has this been going on? what else do they not report? why go through the time and expense to have this log, if it's incomplete, censored, and basically falsified by omission? is this legal or just business as usual? this looks like a news story in and of itself. hello? your thoughts? 03.11.11, anon, facebook, I agree about HCSO calls for service. I know for a fact they do not add most of their calls. (care to expound on this fact?) 03.16.11, jeneria, milwaukee, wi., I think the lack of logs regarding jumpers has to do with our general lack of understanding and humanity toward suicides. The same callousness can be seen in overdoses where the death isn't investigated and is treated as a throwaway because it's just an overdose. Suicides seem to be treated the same way. "The jumper was weak, so why waste time logging it? There's no mystery, no crime, just a jumper." (we believe the reason could be the politically correct practice of not mentioning suicides at all, even officially. if you read the past years' jumper details, you would see many log reports about various incidents on the bridge. how can there suddenly be zero incidents? was there an edict from on high?) 09.04.19, anon, I hope to provide a little bit of clarity as to what I see in the Call Logs. Also I might not provide any helpful info in which case I apologize in advance. But please know I respect what you do, being a fellow sufferer of mental illness. Assist other agency - is literally a catch all ANYTIME they stop out with another agency. Disabled vehicle - have a chat/see if there okay on a traffic stop. However as both of us have noticed they also use this for mutual aide responses on suicide calls for the other side of the bridge making it hard to differentiate if one has come out *unless* the fire boat shows up on the corresponding jurisdictional response. I think the fire boat on the medical side (what I do now fire/medical dispatch) is probably one of your keys. If the fire boat doesn't get dropped, they don't have confirmation of a jumper. Because honestly that is a key response on all of the suicide calls, from pouring over the response plans on your website that are posted. Also in our jurisdiction (different I know) we only send boats or divers for confirmed persons in the water. That seems to be a Florida wide thing, with slight differences in the protocols here and there. Suspicious Vehicles/Persons - Since it's illegal to stop, anyone, disabled, accident, illness, suicidal, would initially be coded as this. Vehicle would mean its empty, but person could be with or without vehicle. But if they then jumped or were suspected or reported to have jumped, the call would have to be upgraded to send additional units. All suicide threats/attempts must be taken seriously until proven otherwise. If no corresponding upgrade came, especially requesting FD, then it would be *reasonably safe* to conclude it didn't involve a jumper. Endangered missing person - Usually a missing person that would have perhaps threatened suicide from the area and mentioned the skyway or it was in the area/zone of the skyway Special detail - Usually used for construction or perhaps if the local agency was covering for FHP on the detail to prevent jumpers Vehicle Stop = Traffic stop Information - Any and all messages that comes across in anyway pertaining too or mentioning the bridge I think the huge key to determining suspected/confirmed jumper calls is to look at the medical responses, as they have a standard response plan for jumper which should include the fire boat for the Water Rescue response, which it appears only Pinellas County has the Fireboat...(unfortunately Pulsepoint doesn't operate in that area yet or you could get notified every time a water Rescue in Pinellas went out) to Rescue/recover and I don't think fire Rescue argues over jurisdiction as much and it appears FB11 is on all of the confirmed jumpers I have found. However a couple of the saves, FB11 was not dropped. So I know it won't always be helpful in the saves but it might narrow your search down. If Pulsepoint ever comes out for Pinellas County, you could get notified anytime a Water Rescue went out making your stats almost 100% accurate as they put the aprox location and the bridge is a well known address for those of us who follow these things. Hopefully some of this information was helpful and feel free to email me back with questions! Thanks for what you do! |

Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office "calls for service" in regard to the skyway bridge. while offhand they appear non-jumper related, but who really knows? |

12.21.05, Carolyn C., Washington, DC., I see below that you have wondered about the information calls as well. Check out the start/stop times. What information call lasts 6 to 8 hours? The attempts took less time. Happy Holidays (your logic seems a worthy ponder. perhaps these calls involving lengthy time spent, do hold jumper prospects after all.) | ||||||
